As we celebrate another birthday, it gives us an opportunity to look back at Bluefin paddleboards then and now and consider how much has changed beneath the graphics.
Our earliest inflatable paddleboards were designed around a clear goal: to create durable, stable boards that helped more people get onto the water. That purpose remains unchanged, but the way we achieve it has developed considerably.
Boards have become lighter. Deck pads have grown. Fin systems have become more specialised. Shapes have been refined for different styles of paddling, while features such as stringers, carbon-reinforced rails and independent chambers are now used where they provide a genuine performance benefit.
The biggest change is that we no longer approach every paddleboard in the same way. Each model is now shaped and equipped around a clearer purpose, whether that is relaxed all-round paddling, compact travel, long-distance touring, speed or shared adventures.
How Bluefin Paddleboards Have Changed
Paddleboard development is rarely about one dramatic invention. It is a process of testing, listening and refining. A feature that looks good on a design screen must also work when somebody carries the board down a beach, inflates it beside a lake, loads it with a dry bag or tries to turn it in changing water.
Bluefin’s UK design team personally tests its boards, using rider feedback and practical experience to refine construction, shaping and deck layouts. Across the range, ESL construction provides the foundation, while additional systems such as FRS carbon side rails and the AirDuo independent chamber are used on performance-focused models.
The result is a range that has moved from broader, general-purpose designs towards boards that solve more specific paddling needs.

From Heavier Construction to Lighter ESL
Why board weight matters away from the water
Paddleboard weight does not only affect performance. It affects the entire experience before and after a session. Every trip involves carrying the packed board, lifting it from storage, walking it to the launch point and packing it away again. That might mean crossing a sandy beach in Cornwall, following a lakeside path in the Lake District or carrying equipment from a car park to a lake.
A lighter board removes friction from the adventure. It can make spontaneous paddling easier, particularly for solo paddlers, younger users and anyone travelling with several pieces of outdoor equipment.
The latest Cruise 10'8 weighs 9.1kg and is 20% lighter than the previous model while retaining durable ESL material, reinforced drop-stitch construction and a tested capacity of up to 28 PSI.
The current Carbon 12' takes the same principle into a more performance-focused design. At 11.15kg, it is approximately 30% lighter than its predecessor while retaining its independent chamber and carbon-reinforced side rails.
Deck Pads Have Become Part of the Performance System
Earlier deck pads were primarily treated as grippy standing surfaces. Modern Bluefin deck layouts do more.
Larger deck pads provide additional room for kneeling, moving the feet, changing stance or bringing a child or SUP Pup aboard. They also make more of the board genuinely usable instead of restricting the paddler to one central position.
The latest Cruise has a supersized deck pad, while the Tandem uses an extra-large pad to give two paddlers space to stand, kneel and change position. The current Rogue also extends the usable deck area for longer sessions, passengers and loaded touring.
Rear kick pads and arch bars
A re-engineered rear kick pad and arch bar can help the paddler locate their rear foot without constantly looking down.
This becomes especially useful during:

Direction changes in restricted spaces
Manoeuvres where rear-foot pressure is needed
On the Sprint, the updated rear section provides greater leverage and control when paddling at speed. On the Rogue, it supports control during touring manoeuvres. On the Cruise and Carbon, it makes a useful technique more accessible to recreational paddlers as they gain experience.
The deck pad has evolved from a passive comfort feature into an active control surface.
Why Bluefin Fin Systems Have Changed
Many earlier Bluefin paddleboards used a basic multi-fin arrangement. Today, the range increasingly uses one specialist US fin selected around the purpose of the board. This simplifies setup, reduces the number of parts that need to be fitted and allows compatible replacement fins to be used through the universal box. More importantly, the fin shape can now be matched to the board.
US Surf Fin
The Cruise, Lite and Tandem use a US Surf Fin designed to support stability and smooth all-round paddling. The Cruise’s current 9-inch fin is intended to improve tracking and provide predictable recreational performance.
US Touring Fin
The Carbon and Rogue use touring-focused fins. Their swept-back profiles are intended to support straight-line tracking and paddling efficiency over longer distances.
US Race Fin
The Sprint uses an 11-inch US Race Fin designed around speed, tracking and directional stability. It works alongside the board’s refined nose, flat rocker and Water Release Rail rather than acting as an isolated upgrade.
There is no single perfect fin for every board. The important development is that the fin is now treated as part of the complete board profile.
Stringers, Rails and Dual Chambers: What Has Changed?
One of the most important developments in the range is the move towards model-specific reinforcement.
Not every board needs the same stiffness system. A compact all-round board has different requirements from a 14-foot speed SUP or a premium dual-chamber model.
Dual Stringer Construction on the Lite
The current Lite uses Dual Stringer Construction to increase stiffness and rigidity while retaining its compact, travel-focused format. A stringer reinforces the board lengthways, helping it resist bending through the centre. This is particularly valuable on a board designed to fold and pack into a smaller bag.
The result is a Lite that can remain portable without feeling like a flexible or stripped-back version of the Cruise. Its wider, rounded profile also provides more surface area for beginner stability, relaxed cruising, yoga and other recreational uses.
FRS carbon-reinforced rails
Bluefin’s Flex Reduction System uses carbon side rails to enhance stiffness and responsiveness. It allows reinforcement to be concentrated along the sides of the board, where it can help reduce flex without adding unnecessary material everywhere else.
AirDuo dual-chamber construction
The Carbon’s dual chamber was already an important part of the original concept, but the system has since been re-engineered. The current AirDuo independent chamber adds stiffness while also providing extra buoyancy and security. It is paired with fused ESL PVC, dense drop-stitch construction and carbon-strengthened rails to produce a firm, responsive platform.
What These Changes Mean on the Water
Technical features matter only when they improve the paddling experience.
Across the range, the latest developments are intended to provide:
Easier transportation: Lower board weights and more compact packages reduce the effort required before and after paddling.
More usable deck space: Larger deck pads create room for stance changes, passengers, pets and equipment.

These improvements are particularly relevant in real situations. A lighter Cruise is easier to carry from a lakeside car park. A compact Lite is simpler to store in a flat or campervan. A loaded Rogue can support a longer touring route, while a Sprint gives a fitness paddler a more efficient platform for maintaining speed.
What Has Not Changed
Although board construction and features have developed, Bluefin’s purpose remains consistent.
As a family-run business born in Yorkshire, Bluefin was founded on the belief that more people should have the freedom to explore the water. The boards are designed by people who paddle, with durability, practical performance and long-term use at the centre of the process.
Current Bluefin SUPs continue to use marine-grade ESL drop-stitch construction, and non-outlet boards are supported by a five-year warranty.
Durability is also connected to responsibility. Designing equipment for a longer useful life can reduce premature replacement, while more adaptable features and replaceable US fins can help owners continue using a board as their needs develop. Bluefin’s wider environmental work includes reduced-plastic packaging, recycled materials, clean-up initiatives and the Second Life refurbishment programme.
